How to export your data from LiveChat
LiveChat has no single 'export all data' button. You can email individual chat transcripts from Archives, turn on automatic email forwarding for future chats, pull bulk chat history in JSON via the Agent Chat API or a webhook, and download performance reports as CSV (Team plan and up).
✓ Verified against LiveChat's official documentation, October 2026
Step by step
- 1Single chat transcript: go to Archives, select the chat, click the three-dot menu in the top-right, choose 'Send transcript', enter your email address, and click 'Send copy'.
- 2Automatic forwarding of future chats: go to Settings > Chat settings > Transcript forwarding, enter one or more email addresses separated by commas, and click 'Save changes'. This only applies going forward, not to past chats.
- 3Bulk/JSON backup: generate a Personal Access Token (PAT) in your account, then call the Agent Chat API's 'list archives' endpoint for bulk history or 'get chat' for a single conversation, using LiveChat's Platform Docs.
- 4Automatic per-chat export to your own server: go to Settings > Webhooks > Add a webhook, set Event to 'chat ends', leave all Data type options ticked, and enter the Target URL of a script on your server to receive the JSON payload after every chat.
- 5Performance/analytics data: open the Reports section (Team plan or higher) and click 'Export CSV' on the specific report you need.
What the export includes
- ✓Full message content of exported chats (visitor and agent messages)
- ✓Pre-chat and post-chat form/survey answers attached to a transcript
- ✓Chat metadata when exported via API or webhook: timestamps, tags, agent and visitor identifiers, custom variables
- ✓Aggregate performance report data as CSV on Team+ plans (chat volume, satisfaction, agent stats, etc.)
What it doesn't include
- ✗Historical chats are not retroactively forwarded once you enable Transcript forwarding — only chats from that point onward are sent
- ✗No single built-in 'export everything' button in the dashboard; a full historical bulk export requires API/webhook setup
- ✗Starter plan has no Reports section, so no CSV/raw-data report export on that tier
- ✗Billing/invoice records, canned responses, KnowledgeBase content, and agent account settings are not part of chat export
Before you start
- ⚠Transcript forwarding (Settings > Chat settings > Transcript forwarding) is forward-looking only — past archived transcripts will not be sent once you turn it on
- ⚠A complete backup of chat history realistically requires developer/API work (PAT + Agent Chat API), not just UI clicks
- ⚠The webhook method requires you to host and maintain your own endpoint/script to receive and store the JSON payload — LiveChat does not store a downloadable file for you
- ⚠CSV/raw-data report export is gated by plan: Reports are available from the Team plan up, not on Starter
Where to take your data
Free and cheaper tools that can take a LiveChat export. See all LiveChat alternatives →
Tawk.to
Tawk.to doesn't support importing another vendor's chat history; keep your LiveChat JSON/CSV export as an offline backup for reference and start new conversations fresh in Tawk.to.
Crisp Free
Crisp has no native 'import past chats' feature for migrating history from another live chat tool; archive your LiveChat JSON export separately and use Crisp going forward for new conversations.
HubSpot Free Chat
HubSpot's free live chat tool doesn't import historical conversations from other chat platforms; store the LiveChat export for record-keeping and begin logging new chats in HubSpot.
Exporting from LiveChat: common questions
Can I bulk-export all my historical LiveChat chats at once?+
Not through the dashboard UI with one click. You either send individual transcripts by email from Archives, or use the Agent Chat API's 'list archives' endpoint (requires a Personal Access Token) to pull history in bulk as JSON.
If I turn on transcript forwarding, will I get my old chats too?+
No. Transcript forwarding only applies to chats that happen after you save the setting; previously archived chats will not be forwarded.
Do I need a developer to get a full backup of my chat data?+
For a complete, automated backup you generally need API or webhook setup (a PAT and a script, or a webhook endpoint on your own server). The built-in options only cover one chat transcript at a time by email.
Can I export chat data as CSV?+
Report-level data (chat volume, satisfaction, agent performance, etc.) can be downloaded as CSV, but only on the Team plan or higher. Individual raw chat transcripts come via email or the JSON API, not as CSV.
Is any export or reporting available on the Starter plan?+
Reporting is available on the plan 'Team' and higher, so Starter plan users don't have access to the Reports/CSV export section; they can still send individual transcripts by email from Archives.
