How to export your data from Heap

Heap doesn't offer a self-serve full-account export. Day-to-day you can export individual chart results and segment/property metadata to CSV (or push a chart to Google Sheets) from inside the app; if you're leaving Heap entirely, Heap provides a one-time full data export in CSV format arranged through support, separate from the ongoing Heap Connect pipeline to data warehouses.

Formats: CSV, Google SheetsPlan: Not specified by Heap's public docs for ad hoc chart/segment/property CSV exports. The one-time full-account export (for teams leaving Heap) is arranged manually via support/your Customer Success Manager, not gated to a specific plan in the docs.Role: Not explicitly restricted by role in the docs for exporting charts or segment/property metadata. The full one-time export is not self-serve — it's requested through Heap support.

Step by step

  1. 1To export a single chart: open the chart, click 'Export' next to the chart's name, then choose 'Export result to CSV' or 'Export to Google Sheets'.
  2. 2Note the size limits: a CSV from the Users page exports the most recent 5,000 users matching the criteria; a CSV from the Charts view exports up to 100,000 rows per metric (no overall file size cap).
  3. 3To export segment metadata: go to Data > Segments, check the box next to the segments you want, then click 'Export Metadata'.
  4. 4Select which types of metadata to include in the export, then click 'Export Segments' to download the CSV file.
  5. 5Repeat the same checkbox + 'Export Metadata' pattern on other Data pages (e.g., Properties) to pull out metadata for those objects.
  6. 6For a complete account export when leaving Heap, contact Heap support (support@heap.io) or your Customer Success Manager to request the one-time full CSV export.
  7. 7If you need ongoing or raw event-level exports instead of a one-time pull, set up Heap Connect to sync data to S3, Redshift, BigQuery, or Snowflake rather than waiting for the final export.

What the export includes

  • ✓Chart results exported as CSV (or pushed to a Google Sheet)
  • ✓Segment metadata (selectable fields) as CSV
  • ✓Property metadata (selectable fields) as CSV
  • ✓A one-time full data export in CSV format when closing/leaving an account

What it doesn't include

  • ✗Raw, event-level data isn't part of the standard chart/segment/property CSV exports — that requires Heap Connect to a data warehouse
  • ✗Heap's docs don't publish an exact schema/field list for the one-time full account export — confirm exact contents with support before relying on it
  • ✗Integration configurations and dashboard sharing settings are not mentioned as part of any CSV export

Before you start

  • ⚠CSV exports from the Users page cap out at the most recent 5,000 matching users; Charts-view exports cap at 100,000 rows per metric
  • ⚠Time-based chart exports (e.g., Session Duration) report values in milliseconds, not seconds
  • ⚠The full one-time export for teams leaving Heap is not a self-serve button — it must be requested from support/your CSM
  • ⚠Ongoing or raw-event replication to a warehouse requires Heap Connect, which is a separate feature from the ad hoc CSV exports

Where to take your data

Free and cheaper tools that can take a Heap export. See all Heap alternatives →

Use PostHog's CSV/event import tooling or its API to load exported chart/segment CSVs as historical events or person properties; for full fidelity, recreate raw event capture going forward since Heap's CSV exports are aggregated chart/metadata results, not raw event streams.

Map exported Heap CSV columns (user/segment properties, event counts) to Amplitude's user and event import formats and upload via Amplitude's HTTP API or batch import; raw behavioral history won't transfer 1:1 since Heap's exports are chart-level, not a raw event log.

Since June is built on top of event data (Segment-style), load exported Heap segment/property CSVs as user traits, and start sending new events to June going forward rather than trying to backfill raw Heap events.

Exporting from Heap: common questions

Can I export all my Heap data myself without contacting support?+

Day-to-day exports (individual charts, segment metadata, property metadata) are self-serve CSV downloads from the app. A complete, one-time full-account export for teams leaving Heap is arranged through Heap support or your Customer Success Manager rather than a self-serve button.

What format does Heap export data in?+

CSV. Charts can alternatively be pushed to a Google Sheet, and the one-time full export offered when you leave Heap is also delivered in CSV format.

Is there a limit on how much data I can export at once?+

Yes. A CSV downloaded from the Users page is limited to the 5,000 most recent matching users, and a CSV from the Charts view is limited to 100,000 rows per metric, though there's no overall file size cap.

How do I get raw, event-level data out instead of chart summaries?+

Use Heap Connect, which syncs your labeled and raw event data to S3, Redshift, BigQuery, or Snowflake, rather than relying on the chart/segment CSV export buttons, which are summarized/aggregated exports.

Does canceling my Heap plan delete my data immediately?+

Heap's docs state they don't believe in vendor lock-in and that you retain ownership of your data, offering a one-time data export in CSV format if you decide to leave — contact support ahead of cancellation to arrange this export.

Can I export segment or property definitions, not just chart results?+

Yes. On the Segments page, check the segments you want, click 'Export Metadata', choose which metadata fields to include, and click 'Export Segments' to download a CSV.
