How to export your data from Shopify
Shopify lets you export products, customers, inventory, and orders as separate UTF-8 CSV files from their respective admin pages; there is no single 'export everything' button, and product images and un-captured payment data are excluded from the files.
✓ Verified against Shopify's official documentation, September 2026
Step by step
- 1Products: from the Shopify admin go to Products, then click Export.
- 2In the export dialog, choose the scope: current page, all products, selected products, or products matching your current search/filter.
- 3Select the CSV type: 'CSV for Excel, Numbers, or another spreadsheet program' or 'Plain CSV file', then click Export products.
- 4Orders: from the Orders page, click Export, then choose an option (current page, all orders, or orders by date).
- 5Under 'Export as', pick the file format, then click Export orders for full order data or Export transaction histories for payment-only data.
- 6Check your downloads folder (small exports) or your email inbox (large exports) for the CSV file — large product exports with >100 variants per product, and orders exports of 51+ orders or by-date exports, are emailed instead of downloaded directly.
- 7Repeat the same Export flow on the Customers page for a customer CSV, and on Products > Inventory for an inventory CSV.
- 8If a product export times out (too many variants), filter the product list into smaller batches and export each batch separately.
What the export includes
- ✓Products: title, variants, pricing, SKU, tags, fulfillment service, inventory tracker status, and SEO title/description fields (only populated if you manually edited them)
- ✓Orders: financial and fulfillment status, line items, discounts, billing/shipping addresses, payment references, tags, and risk level
- ✓Transaction histories: captured payment amounts, gateway, card type, and status per order
- ✓Customers, inventory, and admin/POS staff user lists as separate CSV files
What it doesn't include
- ✗Product images — the CSV only stores image URLs pointing at your existing store; images aren't packaged as files
- ✗Authorization-only payment data in the transaction history export — only captured payments are included
- ✗Discounts and orders are export-only in CSV form (can't be re-imported as CSV to recreate them)
- ✗Store theme, apps, and checkout/settings configuration — not covered by any of the CSV export tools
Before you start
- ⚠CSV files must use UTF-8 encoding; re-saving without confirming UTF-8 can silently corrupt special characters
- ⚠Sorting an exported CSV in a spreadsheet program can disassociate variants or image URLs, which can overwrite products with bad data if re-imported
- ⚠Keep your old Shopify store live until you finish importing products elsewhere — image URLs in the CSV only resolve while the original store and listings still exist
- ⚠Order exports scale with size: under ~100,000 line items can finish in under an hour, while ~400,000 can take around 4 hours
- ⚠Orders of 50 or fewer (or the current page) download directly to your device; 51+ orders or date-range exports are emailed to you and the store owner instead
- ⚠A single product with more than 100 variants forces the whole export to be emailed rather than downloaded
- ⚠Large product exports can time out with 'There was an error exporting your products' — the fix is to filter into smaller batches and export each one separately
- ⚠There's no single combined export — products, customers, orders, inventory, and discounts are all separate CSV files pulled from different admin pages
Where to take your data
Free and cheaper tools that can take a Shopify export. See all Shopify alternatives →
WooCommerce
WooCommerce's built-in Products > Import tool accepts CSV, but its expected column headers differ from Shopify's export format, so you'll need to remap columns (title, SKU, price, images, variants) before importing.
Gumroad has no bulk CSV product importer; use your exported Shopify products CSV as a reference sheet and recreate each digital product manually (or via Gumroad's API) with its price and files.
Lemon Squeezy
Lemon Squeezy also lacks a native Shopify CSV import, so use the exported product CSV as a checklist to manually re-create products/variants, or script it against the Lemon Squeezy API.
Exporting from Shopify: common questions
Does the Shopify product export include my product photos?+
No. The CSV only contains image URLs pointing back to your live store; the files themselves aren't packaged, so keep your original store online until any new platform finishes pulling in the images.
Can I export my entire Shopify store in one file?+
No. Shopify exports products, customers, inventory, and orders as separate CSV files from their own admin pages — there's no single all-in-one export.
Why did my order export get emailed instead of downloaded?+
Exports of 50 orders or fewer (or the current page) download straight to your device; exporting 51+ orders or a date range instead emails the CSV to you and the store owner, and large exports can take up to a few hours.
Does the exported order CSV include full payment/card details?+
The transaction history export only includes captured payment data (amount, gateway, card type, status) — authorization-only data isn't included.
My product export failed with a timeout — what do I do?+
Filter your product list into smaller subsets (by vendor, tag, etc.) and export each filtered batch separately instead of exporting all products at once.
Can I re-import a customer CSV to restore each customer's order history?+
No — order and spend totals shown on a customer are read-only figures generated from your store's actual orders, not fields you can edit or reload via CSV.
