How to export your data from Adobe Photoshop

Photoshop lets you export your work as flattened images (PNG, JPEG, GIF, TIFF), layered files (PSD, PDF), or video/animation (GIF, QuickTime/MOV, PSD) using the File > Export menu or Quick Export as. Cloud documents stored in Creative Cloud can be saved as a local .psd copy so your files are not locked into Adobe's cloud storage.

Formats: PSD, PNG, JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PDF, MOV/QuickTimePlan: Any Photoshop desktop license (Creative Cloud single-app or all-apps plan) - export is not gated behind a higher tierRole: N/A - Photoshop is a single-user desktop app, not a multi-seat admin console

Step by step

  1. 1Open the document you want to export in Photoshop desktop
  2. 2For a quick flattened image: go to File > Export > Quick Export as PNG (or set a different default format in Preferences > Export)
  3. 3For more control over format and size: go to File > Export > Export As to choose PNG, JPG, GIF, or other web formats and adjust quality/size
  4. 4To keep layers, masks, and editability: use File > Save As and choose Photoshop (.psd) or Photoshop PDF
  5. 5For video or animation timelines: go to File > Export > Render Video (QuickTime/MOV) or File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy) for animated GIF
  6. 6If your file is a Creative Cloud cloud document (not a local file), open it and use File > Save a Copy to save a local .psd copy to your computer
  7. 7Repeat per file - Photoshop does not have a single bulk 'export all my data' button; for many files, use File > Scripts > Image Processor or Export As with 'Select All' in the Layers panel for batch export of artboards/layers

What the export includes

  • ✓Pixel/image data in the chosen format (PNG, JPEG, GIF, TIFF)
  • ✓Layers, layer styles, adjustment layers, and editability when exporting to PSD or Photoshop PDF
  • ✓Video/animation frames when exporting via Render Video or Save for Web (Legacy) as GIF
  • ✓A local, non-cloud-dependent copy of a Creative Cloud cloud document when you use Save a Copy

What it doesn't include

  • ✗Non-destructive edit history / History panel snapshots (these are session-only and not part of any export format)
  • ✗Linked Smart Object source files are not embedded unless you embed them first
  • ✗App preferences, workspace layouts, keyboard shortcuts, and presets are not part of a document export (these require a separate Preferences backup)
  • ✗Adobe Fonts activations and Creative Cloud Libraries assets are not included in a document export

Before you start

  • ⚠Export is done per-document; there is no single 'export entire Creative Cloud account' action inside Photoshop
  • ⚠Quick Export as always uses the last-used (or preference-set) format - use Export As if you need to pick the format each time
  • ⚠Cloud documents (.psdc) must be converted with Save a Copy / Save As to a local .psd before they can be opened by non-Adobe apps
  • ⚠Flattening layers for PNG/JPEG/GIF export is permanent in that exported file - keep a PSD master if you need to re-edit later
  • ⚠App preferences and custom workspaces need their own backup/restore flow and are separate from document export

Where to take your data

Free and cheaper tools that can take a Adobe Photoshop export. See all Adobe Photoshop alternatives →

GIMP

GIMP opens .psd files natively (with some limits on advanced layer styles/adjustment layers) - open the exported PSD directly via File > Open, or use a flattened PNG/TIFF for pixel-perfect results

Photopea

Photopea reads and writes .psd in the browser with strong layer fidelity - upload the exported PSD via File > Open to continue editing with minimal conversion loss

Affinity Photo

Affinity Photo imports .psd files including most layers, masks, and adjustment layers through File > Open, then you can re-save in Affinity's native .afphoto format

Exporting from Adobe Photoshop: common questions

Can I export a Photoshop file without losing my layers?+

Yes - use File > Save As (or Save a Copy for a cloud document) and choose Photoshop (.psd) or Photoshop PDF, both of which preserve layers, masks, and adjustment layers.

What's the difference between Quick Export as and Export As?+

Quick Export as immediately exports using one preset format (set in Preferences), while Export As opens a dialog where you can choose the format, resolution, and quality each time.

How do I get a local copy of a Photoshop cloud document?+

Open the cloud document in Photoshop and use File > Save a Copy to write a standalone .psd file to your local disk, independent of Creative Cloud storage.

Will GIMP or Photopea open my exported PSD file correctly?+

Mostly yes for standard layers, masks, and type - both support .psd import, but some Photoshop-specific features (certain layer styles, Smart Object filters) may render differently or need flattening first.

Does exporting a file also export my Photoshop preferences and workspace?+

No - preferences, custom workspaces, and keyboard shortcuts are stored separately from your documents and need to be backed up/restored through Photoshop's own preferences backup feature, not through File > Export.

Can I batch export many layers or artboards at once instead of one file at a time?+

Yes - select multiple layers or artboards in the Layers panel and use File > Export > Export As (or Quick Export As) to export them together, or use File > Scripts > Image Processor for batch processing across multiple documents.
