How to export your data from Buildium
Buildium lets you download your data from Settings > Export Data as separate .xlsx files for Rentals, Associations, Accounting, Tasks, and Communication; full ledger/financial detail isn't a direct export file, so you run the relevant Report in .xlsx format instead.
✓ Verified against Buildium's official documentation, October 2026
Step by step
- 1Log in to Buildium and go to Settings > Export Data.
- 2On the Export Data page, find the category you need: Rentals, Associations, Accounting, Tasks, or Communication.
- 3Click the link for the specific data type you want (e.g., properties, tenants, vendors, owners).
- 4When your browser pops up a prompt, choose to open or save the file.
- 5Save the .xlsx file — it opens in Microsoft Excel, Numbers for Mac, or OpenOffice.
- 6Repeat the click-and-save step for every data type you need; each download is a separate file, there's no single 'export all' button.
- 7For financial/ledger transactions that aren't covered by a direct export link, run the matching Report and export that report to .xlsx instead.
- 8If you use an integration such as AvidStrongroom, scroll to that integration's section on the same Export Data page to download its own CSV files (Properties, GL Accounts, Vendors, Bank Accounts).
What the export includes
- ✓All records under the heading you export, e.g. all properties, all vendors, or all tenants in one file
- ✓Rental owner records, including ownership percentages for properties with multiple owners
- ✓Rentals, Associations, Accounting, Tasks, and Communication category data
- ✓Any report you run and export in .xlsx format
What it doesn't include
- ✗A single combined account-wide export — Buildium's docs describe per-category files only, not one archive of everything
- ✗Full ledger/financial transaction detail for every area — Buildium does not provide export files for all ledger financials, so some financial data must come from a Report instead
- ✗Attached documents/uploaded files are not described as part of the exported .xlsx data in Buildium's export article
Before you start
- ⚠There is no 'export everything' button — each data type listed under Settings > Export Data must be downloaded one at a time
- ⚠Exported files are .xlsx, not CSV, except for specific integration exports (e.g., AvidStrongroom's four CSV files: Companies, Global_Accounts, Global_Vendors, BankAccounts_C)
- ⚠Your browser handles the download as a pop-up, so a pop-up blocker can stop the save/open dialog from appearing
- ⚠Not all financial/ledger data has a direct export link — for some financial data you need to run the corresponding Report and export that to .xlsx
Where to take your data
Free and cheaper tools that can take a Buildium export. See all Buildium alternatives →
TurboTenant
Export your Buildium property, unit, tenant, and lease .xlsx files, then manually re-create the properties/units and re-enter tenant and lease details in TurboTenant, since there's no native Buildium import wizard — plan on manual entry for historical ledger transactions.
Avail
Use the Buildium Rentals and Accounting exports as a reference sheet to manually add properties, units, and tenants into Avail; convert the .xlsx files to CSV if you want to keep a structured reference while re-entering lease and rent data.
Rentastic
Use the Buildium Accounting export (.xlsx) as your source for historical income/expense records, then manually enter or bulk-upload that transaction history into Rentastic to rebuild your property financial records.
Exporting from Buildium: common questions
Does Buildium offer one full account export before I cancel?+
No. Buildium's documentation describes exporting data category by category from Settings > Export Data (Rentals, Associations, Accounting, Tasks, Communication) — there's no single combined 'export everything' file.
What file format do Buildium exports use?+
Standard data exports from Settings > Export Data are .xlsx files openable in Excel, Numbers, or OpenOffice. Some integration-specific exports, like the AvidStrongroom files, are .csv instead.
Can I export my complete financial ledger from Buildium?+
Not as a single direct export file — Buildium's docs state it does not provide export files for all ledger financials, so you need to run the relevant Report and export that report to .xlsx.
Do I need admin permissions to export data from Buildium?+
Buildium's export article doesn't specify a required role, but the Export Data option lives under Settings, which is typically restricted to administrator-level users.
Will my uploaded documents and attachments be included in the export?+
Buildium's export documentation doesn't mention attachments or uploaded files as part of the exported .xlsx data, so you should download any important documents separately before switching tools.
Can I schedule or automate recurring data exports from Buildium?+
No. The documented process is manual: click the link for a data type and save the file your browser prompts you with — there's no mention of scheduled or automated exports.
