How to export your data from 1Password
1Password lets you export vault items (logins, credit cards, notes, etc.) to a 1PUX (JSON-based) or CSV file directly from the desktop app, or via Credential Exchange on iOS/Android; there is no separate 'account data export' admin tool, and exported files are unencrypted plaintext.

Step by step
- 1On Mac/Windows/Linux, open and unlock the 1Password 8 app.
- 2Mac: select File > Export in the menu bar and choose the account to export. Windows/Linux: select the ellipsis at the top of the sidebar, then Export, and choose the account.
- 3Enter your account password when prompted.
- 4Choose an export format - 1PUX (full data, JSON-based) or CSV (Login items only, limited fields) - then select Export Data.
- 5Choose a save location and select Open (Mac/Windows) or OK (Linux) to complete the export.
- 6On iOS (26+) or Android (14+), open the app, go to Settings > Advanced > Start Export (iOS) to export via the Credential Exchange standard directly into another supported app, including passkeys.
- 7If your account is set to Unlock with SSO, ask your team admin to temporarily turn this off, since SSO-unlocked accounts cannot export data.
- 8Delete the exported file once you've imported it elsewhere, since it is stored in plaintext.
What the export includes
- ✓1PUX: full vault/item data including Logins, credit cards, secure notes, custom fields, and attached files, preserved in a JSON-based nested account/vault/item structure
- ✓CSV: Title, Website, Username, Password, One-time password, Favorite status, Archived status, Tags, and Notes for Login/Password items only
What it doesn't include
- ✗CSV export excludes security questions, linked items, linked apps, and custom fields (e.g. 2FA backup codes)
- ✗Passkeys are not included in desktop 1PUX/CSV exports - they can only be exported from 1Password for iOS or Android
- ✗Accounts unlocked via SSO cannot be exported until an admin disables Unlock with SSO for that account
Before you start
- ⚠Exported files (1PUX and CSV) are not encrypted - they are stored in plaintext, so anyone with access to the file can read your passwords; do not email or store them online, and delete them after use
- ⚠You cannot export from "All Vaults" in 1Password 7 - you must switch to and export each vault individually
- ⚠On team/business accounts, admins can revoke the "Export items" permission on specific vaults, blocking member exports
- ⚠1Password 7 is being retired starting early 2027 and should be upgraded to 1Password 8 to avoid disruption
- ⚠If you export desktop data and had passkeys saved in 1Password, you'll need to create new passkeys on each site and store them elsewhere, since desktop exports don't carry passkeys

Exporting from 1Password: common questions
Can I export all my 1Password data at once?+
In 1Password 8, exporting is done per account (all vaults you have access to in that account) in one 1PUX or CSV file. In 1Password 7, you must export vault by vault since exporting from "All Vaults" isn't supported.
Which export format should I use: 1PUX or CSV?+
Use 1PUX if you want the fullest data - it's JSON-based and captures custom fields, attachments, and all item types. Use CSV only if the destination app requires it, since CSV only exports Login items with a limited set of fields.
Is my exported 1Password data encrypted?+
No. Both 1PUX and CSV export files are stored in plaintext and are not encrypted, so anyone who gets the file can read your passwords.
Why can't I export my data?+
Two common reasons: your account is unlocked via SSO (export is blocked until an admin disables Unlock with SSO), or a team admin has removed the "Export items" permission on the vault you're trying to export.
Can I export passkeys stored in 1Password?+
Only from the iOS or Android apps using the Credential Exchange standard. Desktop 1PUX/CSV exports do not include passkeys, so you'll need to regenerate passkeys on each site if you only export from desktop.
Is exporting available on the free trial or every plan?+
Yes, export is a feature of the 1Password apps themselves, available to any account holder with export permission on a vault, regardless of subscription tier.
